Two artists are taking a holistic and intuitive approach to a material and sculptural inquiry, in conjunction with their individual investigations of the ‘self’ with questions regarding their own context and existence.

Working within the realms of the temporal, the heuristic and the divine; both artists are gently treading across that interstitial space between presence and absence, knowing and being, through material manipulation and observations, letting the materials exist in a certain way.

“Materiality in works of art extends beyond the simple fact of physical matter to broadly encompass all relevant information related to the work’s physical existence; the work’s production date and provenance, its history and condition, the artist’s personal history as it pertains to the origin of the work and the work’s place in the canon of art history are all relevant to the aesthetic experience.  The artwork’s physicality, those aspects that can be sensed and verified by viewers, is a first consideration; physicality impacts content and, subsequently, meaning.”[Christina Mills (2009), “Materiality as the Basis for the Aesthetic Experience In Contemporary Art.” University of Montana.]

W/hole County

W/hole County
Sophie Cero and the Late Developers

W/hole County is a collaboration between artist Sophie Cero and the Corby based, Late Developers photography group to create narrative artworks from a series of potholes sourced from sites across Northamptonshire in both urban and rural locations. Used as starting points for discussion, storytelling, and visual juxtapositions, the potholes act as imaginary portals whereby participants disappear down a hole in Corby, to reappear through a linked, twin hole located at the other end of the county.
